Mikael Schwartz Jonsson, Head of Harju Elekter in Sweden: “We appreciate the opportunity from SL to continue contributing to a reliable electricity supply for Stockholm’s public transport system.”

Harju Elekter awarded prestigious Slussen project

As part of the rebuilding of the Slussen area in central Stockholm, Region Stockholm has chosen Harju Elekter in Sweden, currently SEBAB, to upgrade the electrical substation at the Slussen metro station in Stockholm. Work will begin in September and is expected to be completed in one year. An extensive electrical project, the total order value is SEK 35 million.

Slussen – an important hub for public transport

Linking Stockholm city centre, Gamla Stan (old town) and Södermalm to the south, the Slussen area of Stockholm is a crucial hub for buses, regional and local trains, and the metro. Hundreds of thousands of travellers pass through Slussen each day, while boats navigate Slussen’s lock between Lake Mälaren and Saltsjön, which leads to and from the Baltic Sea. Now, after 75 years, Slussen is in need of complete renovation to cope with the demands of the growing city that surrounds it. When the work is complete, the Slussen of the future will be a safer, more efficient road traffic and public transportation hub than ever before.

Upgrading the metro station

As part of the overall project the Slussen metro station will be extensively modernized with new facilities and connections to buses and regional train terminals. The station’s existing electrical system is also in acute need of refurbishment to bring it up to current standards, and large parts of the electrical substation will be upgraded. These include switchgear and control panels which have reached the end of their technical lifespan and must be replaced. The aim is to ensure continued reliable operation of the metro, increase safety, and reduce energy and maintenance costs.

Roland Andersson, Business Area Manager at SEBAB said: “The Stockholm Metro organization, SL, and SEBAB have a long-term relationship and I believe SL appreciates our capabilities in terms of a reliable solution and support. We will continue supporting them in the very best way possible.”
